It’s easy to make your own protein powder and protein shake at home. If you want to replace unnatural and synthetic protein powders, but yet increase your protein intake and build muscles, then this homemade protein powder and shake will help you.
This is a tradition recipe of wrestlers from India, many of whom are also vegetarians, yet they are extremely strong and will outperform most body builders. The drink is called Thandai, and it’s also always prepared during the spring festival of Holi.

This protein powder is plant-based, and also features such ingredients like watermelon seeds, fennel, black pepper and rose petals. Each ingredient has a purpose, aiding in digestion and giving a cooling effect to the drink, so it’s a perfect post-workout drink as well.

To prepare this protein powder you need to grind all the ingredients together and then you can store it for several weeks in the fridge. When you want to drink your protein shake, just mix the powder with the milk of your choice, it can be dairy or it can be plant-based milk. For example, hemp milk, almond milk and coconut milk are great choices.
This recipe is also a great way to consume nuts, yet you will avoid a heavy feeling in your stomach and possible digestive issues, which are often caused by the overconsumption of nuts.

kcalSimple and highly nutritious nut-based protein powder and protein shake
Ingredients
1/2 cup cashew nuts
1/2 cup Almonds
1/2 cup pistachios
1/4 cup melon seeds
1/4 cup poppy seeds
1/2 cup fennel seeds
1/2 cup dried rose petals
15 cardamom pods (separate the seeds from the skin, we will only use the seeds)
1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns
Directions
- First, roast the nuts and the seeds. Roast all the seeds separately (watch my recipe video for details), and then you can roast the nuts together. The nuts will take about 2 minutes to get roasted correctly.
- Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend into a smooth powder. You can store this powder for 2 weeks in the fridge.
- To make a protein shake, take a glass of milk of your choice, or half a glass of milk and half a glass of yoghurt. Heat it together with 1 tablespoon of the powder, strain it and enjoy. If you don’t mind the coarse texture of the mix then you don’t have to heat it – just mix it and enjoy it as it is!
